The Okay Witch by Emma Steinkellner

The Okay Witch

(Emma Steinkellner, 2020)

If you are looking for a wonderfully witchy graphic novel to read this Halloween (or any other time of the year) Steinkellner's The Okay Witch is the book for you! Steinkellner's novel follows the endearing Moth Hush on her magical journey as she discovers that the world(s) around her are much more complex than she initially believed.

Growing up in the small colonial town of Founder's Bluff, Moth is no stranger to the tales of witch hunts from long ago. Founder's Bluff proudly celebrates it's heritage and founding family annually. However, on her 13th Halloween, Moth discovers that her family also plays a significant role in the town’s history, one that she never thought possible. From accidental "first magic" to a secret witch world, this enchanting story takes the reader on a wild adventure as Moth works to untangle the complicated web of her town's history.

Steinkellner's breathtaking illustrations and equally phenomenal story create a world that is both relatable and magical altogether. I highly recommend this novel to all middle and early high school teachers. It will certainly put you in a festive fall mood and get you ready for Halloween.
