Hello!

My name is Becca Benson and I am a first year English Language Arts teacher. This summer, as I began to prep and plan my head started to fill with a swirl of overwhelming thoughts about my future in the classroom. There’s no question that this is a time of uncertainty and change, especially within education. So to help myself, and maybe others, I decided I’d try to write my thoughts out. My three main goals for this site are to record my first year teaching/share my experience, advocate for necessary changes in modern education, and to grow as an educator. This site is both a tool for personal reflection and growth as well as an attempt to share resources and ideas with other educators. As a teacher, I have committed myself to be a life long learner and this website is part of that process.

A Bit About Me

I am a recent graduate of Hood College where I earned a B.A. in English and secondary education with a concentration in Literature. My pronouns are she/her and I currently teach 7th grade. Outside of the classroom, I am heavily involved in theater. Prior to earning my degree, I spent several years working in theater education. I am a member and former chapter president of Kappa Delta Pi as well as Alpha Lambda Delta. My favorite classic novel has to be S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders but my favorite middle grade 2020 read so far is Alex Gino's Rick. My go-to poet is the incredible Clint Smith and my favorite content to teach is American Literature. This year my fall semester will be entirely virtual, and though this is far from what I expect my first year to look like, I am beyond excited to work with my students in the safest way possible. To learn more about me, contact me, or get updates for this site you can check me out on Twitter and/or Instagram. Feel free to reach out with any feedback or thoughts, I’d also love to be able to connect and collaborate with other first year teachers!
